Acoustic Insulation FAQs
-
What is acoustic insulation?
Put simply, acoustic insulation is one of many elements of soundproofing a space. Ordinarily, acoustic insulation will be found in the floors or walls of a building, installed to ensure there is adequate sound comfort for occupants of a building.
There are various types of acoustic insulation, and selecting the right one for your needs depends on the requirement – are you looking for soundproofing, or sound blocking? Most design plans comprise both options to effectively reduce unwanted sound. SIS offers a range of soundproofing and sound absorbing materials, so if you’re unsure which product suits your needs please don’t hesitate to speak with one of the team and we’ll be happy to advise.

How can I define a material’s noise reduction performance?
A material’s noise reduction performance can be defined as its ability to reduce the sound passing through it. The key value is the Weighted Sound Reduction Index (Rw in dB). It is a single number rating of airborne sound insulation between rooms, over a range of frequencies. The denser and more impervious a material, the better it blocks or reduces sound transmission from one room to another.

What is a sound barrier?
A sound barrier is a sound blocker and usually includes insulation with a high mass, which then reduces the amount of sound that can pass through it. A standard domestic door is an excellent example of a noise barrier when it is closed as it reduces the sound of external noise. Sound waves flow like water and air, so it is impracticable to use a sound barrier such as a fence or screen to stop the noise, but they are useful when applied to reduce noise immediately on the other side of them. From distances farther away the noise reduction will be less efficient.
